5 August 2020, BANGKOK – Thai Union Group PCL’s Global Director of Sustainability Dr. Darian McBain has been named to Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business for 2020 in recognition of her adoption of innovative technologies to transform the global seafood industry.

The U.S. magazine said McBain had propeled Thai Union to the top of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the food products industry through the development of industry-leading policies on ethical recruitment and by orchestrating a landmark 2017 agreement with Greenpeace to drive positive change across the seafood sector.

McBain joins the 11th annual list alongside women and men from such companies as Netflix, Google and Patagonia as well as institutions including Johns Hopkins University and the ACLU of Massachusetts.

The Most Creative People in Business list recognizes individuals who used their innovative thinking to make an impact on the world beyond financial success.

“It’s such an incredible honor to be recognized among such a prestigous list of people who are making a significant, positive impact in business around the world,” McBain said. “Sustainability has been a life-long passion of mine and I’ve been lucky to witness first hand how it can transform not only individual businesses but entire industries. I’m grateful to be surrounded by an amazing team of people who share my passion and work every day to explore new, innovative ways to make the global seafood industry more sustainable.”

Fast Company also praised McBain’s adoption of technologies in the pursuit of positive change. This includes fitting fishing vessels with satellite Wi-Fi that empowered workers to use a chat application to connect with families back on land, and expanding work on an eObserver program with the Nature Conservancy, using cameras aboard vessels to record an entire fishing trip. In 2020, Thai Union will work with Stanford University to use AI to review the footage in an effort to ensure safety and catch protocols were followed by the vessels.

“Each year, we recognize artists and conventionally creative people making their mark on business and corporate executives deploying creativity and innovation to address some of the biggest challenges facing businesses and society,” said Stephanie Mehta, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “Individually and collectively, the Most Creative People are an inspiration.”
