15 NOVEMBER 2018, BANGKOK – Thai Union Group PCL was highly commended for its work on ethical recruitment and migrants’ rights by Thomson Reuters Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the world’s largest news and information provider, and judges for the Stop Slavery Award during the annual human rights forum Trust Conference on Wednesday in London.
Thai Union was one of six companies shortlisted for the foundation’s annual Stop Slavery Award. Nominees also included Apple and Unilever, among others, representing a range of industries from seafood and fashion to financial services and technology. The overall winner was Apple.
“To be highly commended for the Stop Slavery Award is a great honor and recognition of the hard work by our teams at Thai Union on our SeaChange® sustainability strategy along with their commitment to make a positive impact on the business and people’s lives,” said Dr. Darian McBain, Thai Union’s global director for sustainable development.
The Stop Slavery Award was launched in 2015 and is the first global recognition for businesses which have set a gold standard in efforts to eradicate forced labor from supply chains.
Thai Union was also nominated for the Stop Slavery Award in 2016.
Thai Union’s efforts and international advocacy to combat modern slavery and forced labor were also recognized recently as Thai Union was invited to participate in a high-level panel at the United Nations General Assembly, with Dr. McBain presenting the company’s actions and experiences in front of the world’s leadership on this agenda in New York City. Further, Thai Union was recently rated number one in the world in the food products industry in the 2018 Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). SeaChange® successfully drove the score with an industry best-in-class 100th percentile ranking for total sustainability score. It was the fifth consecutive year Thai Union was named to the DJSI.
