Chicken of the Sea donates 500,000 servings of seafood to struggling college students facing financial difficulties

Food insecurity an increasingly present concern for many in vulnerable communities

LOS ANGELES, Calif., - December 14, 2021 – Chicken of the Sea has donated more than 500,000 servings of protein rich seafood to college campuses to support students who are struggling to afford food because of financial difficulties.

As millions of Americans celebrated Thanksgiving last month, the stark reality of food insecurity became an increasingly present concern for many people in vulnerable communities. On college campuses across the U.S., financial aid is insufficient, while tuition and living costs are rising, leaving students wondering where they might find their next meal once dining halls and dorms closed for the holiday. According to The Campus Hunger Project, at least 3 million college students are food insecure, forced to choose between buying books or buying food.

“This holiday season, it’s important that we all do our part to give back in any way we can – both big and small. That’s why Chicken of the Sea is honored to support college organizations, like the LMU Food Pantry, that provide free food to students experiencing hunger due to financial strain,” said Craig Rexroad, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at Chicken of the Sea. “Our company avidly supports the global call for action to help preserve access to safe and nutritious food. We hope these donations helped to alleviate food insecurity on campuses so students could focus more on learning and celebrating with those they love.”

Chicken of the Sea focused on supporting collegiate communities across the nation to help bolster their holiday with half a million protein rich servings to campuses, including University of California Los Angeles, California State, University Long Beach, Loyola Marymount University and El Camino College.

Beyond college campuses, Chicken of the Sea also partnered with Convoy of Hope and the Old Savannah City Mission during Thanksgiving to funnel ongoing donations to vulnerable populations within the local communities where the company operates.

The donations continue the long-standing support of communities by Chicken of the Sea and parent company Thai Union Group, such as the humanitarian assistance to local communities impacted by COVID-19. Under the global Thai Union Cares program, the Company has donated more than 3.3 million servings of food, along with more than 78,000 cans of Bellotta and Marvo cat and dog food and over 4,000 kilograms of hard dog food to animal charities, pet shelters, community organizations and animal volunteers.
