3 April 2020, BANGKOK - Thai Union Group PCL. will have more than 7,000 trees planted around the world to offset the carbon footprint from its annual global leadership meeting last year.

Thai Union has joined with #TeamTrees to have 7,222 trees planted between 2020-2022 as part of the company’s strategy to offset a global meeting and help protect the environment, noting that 2019 was the warmest year on record for the world’s oceans.

“At Thai Union, we understand very clearly the threat to our planet from climate change and have already seen a significant impact on the world’s oceans,” said Darian McBain, Global

Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability. “As one of the world’s largest seafood companies, we take very seriously our responsibility to take a leadership position in protecting the environment, and by planting these trees we are taking another step in the right direction.”

#TeamTrees was launched by American Jimmy Donaldson after he was challenged to plant 20 million trees to celebrate reaching 20 million subscribers on his YouTube channel. Donaldson teamed up with other YouTubers to raise money, which is being donated to the Arbor Day Foundation, a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees.

Addressing climate change is a key element of Thai Union’s global sustainability strategy, SeaChange®, through which it has developed industry-leading programs that are helping protect the oceans. In line with this, Thai Union recently became the first food producer and Thailand-listed company to join EP100, a Climate Group global initiative on smarter energy use, with an aim to double its energy productivity by 2041, from a 2016 baseline.

Last year, Thai Union was ranked number one on the inaugural Seafood Stewardship Index (SSI), which assessed the contribution of the world’s 30 largest seafood companies to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
