9 October 2020, BANGKOK - Thai Union Group PCL. has been recognized for its global initiatives to deliver against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) at the Responsible Business Awards 2020.

Thai Union received the SDG Impact Award for also setting industry-leading standards and implementing programs that are best aligned to impact the SDGs. The awards, which were held virtually from the UK due to COVID-19, celebrate leadership in sustainable business and recognize companies whose actions are having a positive impact on business, society and the environment.

The judges praised Thai Union for being aware of the potential negative impacts from the business and taking steps to address them by embracing the SDGs. Thai Union was also recognized for understanding the full potential and importance of driving the SDGs and for embracing partners to achieve its goals.

“At Thai Union, we are incredibly proud of the work we have done since we launched our global sustainability strategy, SeaChange®, in 2016,” said Dr. Darian McBain, Group Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Thai Union. “As one of the world’s leading seafood producers, Thai Union has a comprehensive set of commitment that are creating positive change across the entire seafood industry and are helping us to contribute to the UN SDGs.”

Thai Union is currently focused on three of the UN SDGs: SDG 2 – Zero Hunger, SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 14 – Life Below Water, which contributes to broader societal change in areas where the company has direct influence. Thai Union’s initiatives are also contributing in some ways to all 17 of the UN SDGs.

Under SeaChange®, Thai Union has introduced widespread change to build a more sustainable and ethical business, including establishing an Ethical Migrant Recruitment Policy; launching the world’s first shrimp products fed with innovative and sustainable Feedkind® protein replacing fishmeal from wild-caught fish; joining the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) to find and promote solutions to the growing issue of abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear; and delivering food aid to communities across the world impacted by natural disasters and crises, including COVID-19.
